Hi Guys

There has been a slight change in plan to Saturday the 3rd July Club meeting :-)

The Soccer only starts at 16:00 so we will be doing the
"Winter Hunting Strategy" tutorial from 15:00 - 16:00

We will braai and watch the ball game after the talk so that we are
not braaing in the dark! And those with small kids can get them back
home and in bed at a reasonable time.

The weather looks nice and warm so the beach will be good for the kids.

The idea is that we will braai and watch the game, and then i will be doing a session on "Hunting in Winter" This will cover hunting strategies, species, locations and more.
This will be a dynamic and interactive time not to be missed!

DURBAN NORTH WORKOUT

!!! TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN !!!

Due to numbers of interested participants for the DURBAN NORTH WORKOUT, I've had to re-structure the format just a little to try and accommodate everyone. The new training schedule is flexible enough for people to come join which ever part of the WORKOUT they choose to participate in … be it Part 1 or Part 2 or both if you wish to do so. Everyone is welcome to join both Parts of the WORKOUT.

The restructured schedule is as follows.

PART 1 : 08H00 – 10H00:-
On Land:-
Welcoming and introducing the workshop.

but with the training with Fernando on Saturday we have decided to can the evening get together
and thow our eggs in at the training.

The training starts at 8am with O2 and Co2 tables ... much like we did at Princes Grant.
And then at 10.30am we will be doing a training session.

I know some guys are going to come through only for the 10.30am training ...and that is fine.

'On Your Ear'

SOME PERSPECTIVES ON PRESSURE IN THE MIDDLE EAR

Imagine for a moment not being able to do that one thing that means the world to youâ€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦ok, sorry, for all you guys out there, I'm sure it's the second most important thing, but not by much I can guarantee. Imagine epic diving conditions. Crystal warm waters, flat calm surf and infused with a plethora of good eating and challenging species for you to pursue. Imagine watching all your dive buddies enjoying this bounty and having fun while you either drive the boat, or keep the home fires burning for their return. Every diver has at some stage suffered the frustrations of sinus squeeze or equalization problems which see you having to sit on the bench for a game or 2. But if you think this suffering is bad, imagine the purgatory of not being able to dive indefinitely! Unlikely you say!? Think again. This hell on earth, the living nightmare of all spearoâ€™s could be just around the corner for any of us. And the cause of this predicament is quite simply neglecting to look after your ears and your nose.

Being one of those unfortunate souls who suffers poor eustachian tube function exacerbated by minor sinus problems, Iâ€™m all to familiar with the pain, suffering, wailing and gnashing of teeth which come associated with these long spells away from the embryonic embrace of the great oceans. And as spearfishing is my reason for existence, I have had to make a study of the cause of my discomfort in order to better understand and remedy the problem.

Although the middle ear problems I have had have been rather more extreme than most, it never ceases to amaze me how many divers, the good the bad and the ugly who have complained of ongoing problems with their ears and sinuses. Itâ€™s a common ailment. Further to this, it has stupefied me just how little, or how shallow the understanding of the ear/sinus structure and function is among these guys.

Now here is the thing. And Iâ€™m probably going to be shot down in smoke and challenged vehemently on this, but here is a fact that Iâ€™m comfortable to stand by: Despite the teachings of Jacque Cousteau in â€œHomo delfinnisâ€, and the basic principles of Darwinâ€™s emergent evolution, the current design of the plumbing inside the head of modern man is not conducive to diving depth! If it were, we wouldnâ€™t have the global epidemic of ENT (ear, nose and throat) problems associated with diving.

And hereâ€™s another thing, but this time Iâ€™m sure all spearoâ€™s will concur with me: Most sports require some degree of skill, luck and physical fitness, and the driving force behind success is passion. For spearfishing itâ€™s a little different in that there is a further element over and above these prerequisites which one needs in order to progress and that element is called physiology. Without good ENT physiology, you are going to find yourself stranded on terra firma, as skill, fitness and passion alone is not enough to ensure competent diving. This is what sets spearoâ€™s and freedivers apart from other sporting disciplines.

So, having made these statements, what is the remedy to ensure or at the very least control good ENT functioning?
If you are not fortunate to have been blessed with the God given right to efficient ENT physiology, what can one do to increase ones time in the water and stave off injury or damage to your plumbing?

Sticking with the biblical theme and given that good ENT functioning and physiology is the â€œHoly Grailâ€, lets look at the important parts of the ear and sinus to have a better understanding of how to manage the problem.

There are 3 fundamentally important parts to the middle ear. The tympanum (ear drum), mastoid and eustachian tube. Letâ€™s call these the â€œHoly Trinityâ€. Cast out from the middle ear are the sinus cavities, dark caverns that can cause untold evil to befall you.Â These 2 entities, although separate are intricately intertwined and one cannot function without the other, and a problem in one adversely affects the other.Â Just as heaven and hell share the same street, so to do the components of your ear, nose and throat.

On visiting an ENT specialist with a related problem, you can bet your bottom dollar that the first thing he will do is gaze into your nose to assess the condition of the sinus cavity. This is always the first line of inquiry as it is undoubtedly the most common cause of diving related problems. Fortunately most of the disorders associated with polyps, deviated septumâ€™s and sinus disease are readily treatable if not curable. The first line of defense against possible malfunction is to ensure that your sinuses stay clean and healthy as they can easily compromise good middle ear function.

Problems in the middle ear itself can be much more complicated. There are way more working parts to the â€œHoly Trinityâ€ and as such it will forever remain an enigma to the layman. One of the most common ailments is barotrauma, the perforation of the tympanum. The cause of this is however most likely sinus related in that the irritated sinus affects the eustachian tube which results in poor eustachian tube functioning. Another common problem is the mastoid. This is a bony cavity within the middle ear which is supposed to be highly porous, looking a bit like an aero chocolate bar. The importance of the mastoid to divers is paramount, as it acts as a buffer or shock absorber if you will during pressure changes and equalization. Sometimes, due to middle ear disease or repeated infections, the mastoid becomes clogged and this hampers the efficiency of ones ability to equalize the rapid pressure changes experienced during freediving. Finally we have the eustachian tube, and this is a tricky little prophet. On average about 2 to 2.5 cm in length, the eustachian tube is the kingpin of good middle ear function. Just as for Christians, nobody gets to heaven except by Jesus, so with the eustachian tube which is the only portal allowing air to move in and out the middle ear. Fail your eustachian tube and you fail yourself. The wonders of modern medicine have allowed doctors to literally perform surgical miracles. Modern surgery can: replace your heart with a vibrator, let blind people see, perform brain surgery, replace a hip and even turn boys into girls and vice versa. What modern medicine canâ€™t do however is to surgically repair or enhance eustachian tube function. This delicate part of the body is so complex in its simplicity that other than highly dangerous and experimental laser surgery, it is not possible to operate on it in any way. The eustachian tube varies in size and shape and if you have narrow tubes, the only way to ensure the ability to dive, is to effectively manage all the other parts of the middle ear and sinus cavity.Â Â Â

Another common ailment of spearfishermen is a condition called exostoses, or more commonly known as surferâ€™s ear. This condition manifests in the outer ear canal and is characterized by bony growths which can, if untreated, block the entire outer ear canal. Exostoses are caused by repeated exposure to cold water. The outer ear canal is an interesting part of the body in that it is the only place where one will find skin directly overlaying the bony cavity with no fatty tissue in between. The result is that the underlying bone is irritated by cold water resulting in these bony growths. Unfortunately most divers are unaware of this until problems with the outer ear develop as a direct result. The only treatment is a simple surgical procedure in which the exostoses are ground away to open the ear canal efficiently once more. To prevent exostoses, especially for divers in the colder temperate waters, diving with vented earplugs is recommended. Docs Pro-plugs, available on the internet are designed for divers and surfers and the plugs are 100% safe for freediving use. The idea is that the plugs will keep warm water in the ear canal during the dive. Please ensure that vented plugs are used to prevent a barotrauma.Â

Spearfishing is not a sport, or even a hobby. Itâ€™s a lifestyle. Only the dedicated spearo knows the degree of commitment required to excel. Much of this has to do with â€œmanaging the physiologyâ€. Poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol and drug abuse are the sworn enemies of good ENT functioning. Divers who suffer food or nasal allergies need to pay penance to their lifestyle so much more than the â€œchosen onesâ€. If one takes their spearfishing seriously, sacrifices have to be made, and a routine of ritual has to be observed.

SEAFOOD PAELLA ... A must!

With the East Coast Rock Lobster season recently opened, this is a good time for a day out diving and collecting the bounty of the sea. What better way to share this with friends and family than with a simple but tasty paella. This is a meal with origins in Spain. Itâ€™s basically a dish designed to deal with leftovers. There is no hard and fast rule and paella style and ingredients change from one region to the next. The basic principle is a seafood and meat mix with some veggies and pulled together with rice.

INGREDIENTS
3 table spoons olive oil
1 onion finely chopped
2 Red/green or yellow peppers roughly chopped
Green beans and fresh mushrooms cut into pieces
4 ripe tomatoes chopped
1 cup Frozen peas
1 can artichoke hearts (if available) and 1 can red kidney beans
2 cloves garlic finely sliced
Chopped fresh dill, rosemary and parsley
Chilli powder/cayenne pepper or chopped fresh chilli to taste
Pinch of saffron threads or 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 cups long grain rice
1 liter chicken stock
200 g chorizo sausage or Russians if chorizo not available
200 g cooked chicken
200 g cooked ham or beef
200 g raw calamari steak cut into 2 cm slices, or calamari rings
3 crayfish tails
20 cooked fresh mussels out of shell and debearded or 1 can of tinned smoked mussels
15 raw prawns
Firm fleshed fish cooked in small pieces
Juice and zest of 1 lemon
Fresh lemon wedges to serve
Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD
Heat the olive oil in a large heavy based frying pan, paella pan or skottel. Fry onions for a few mins, then add garlic, chilli, chorizo and rosemary, cook over medium heat till sausage is cooked and starts to curl. Add peppers, beans and mushrooms, cook for a few mins. Add rice, tomatoes and zest, stir in till well coated. Pour in stock and add saffron or turmeric and mix well. Add meat and chopped dill, turn heat to low and simmer covered till rice is half cooked. Add frozen peas, kidney beans and artichokes and cook till rice is nearly soft and liquid is absorbed. Add raw calamari and prawns, adding the rest of the fish ingredients, lemon juice and parsley just before the paella is ready to serve.Â Serve with a wedge of lemon and a half mussel shell to serve as spoon.
VARIATION: This is SA; try using left over braai E.g. wors, pork sausage, steak etcâ€¦

Hey guys,

Well if you are like me you are probably rather bumm'd over the no show by the Couta this year? I have hardly dived as a result .... I guess I am sulking!!!

Never the less things go on and it is Saltys Club Nite on Friday .....'Good Friday'
I know some guys are going away ... so we are just going to have a social get together and watch 'Ocean Men' a film that was featured on Imax a while ago with Pipin Ferreras and Umberto Pelizzari
This is a very inspiring film and is not one to be missed.

We are also going to be finalising the membership list and ordering the club shirts.
As we need to get the list to SAUFF with all the members that are registering.

Salty Divers Freediving Workshop

Hi Guys,

As you are all aware we are having a freediving workshop at Princes Grant on Friday evening. There have been a couple cancellations so there are a few spots open. The itinerary is looking very good and I would encourage every one to try and make it.

Here is the basic format:

On Land:-

Welcoming and introducing the workshop.
Stretching
Complete Breathing Cycle
Lung Stretching exercises.
Lung Packing
Breathing Meditation

In the Pool:-

4 minute mammalian reflex (water)
Introduction to Empty Lung Apnea.
C02 Tables.
02 Tables.
End of Workshop.

We will have a braai after (and have 2 cases of free beer!!)

The workshop is at the clubhouse at Princes Grant, please call myself or Tom for directions.
Please try get there for 6pm as the workshop will start at 6:30 sharp.

Every one is asking "When are we having a Club meet?"

We are still trying to get all the wheels to our new year and run out of time to organise an event for the end of Feb ... oh its March already Damn!

No serious we have some great things planned. On the 12 March we are meeting up with Fernando from Centurion Freedivers and he will be holding a work shop with us. It looks like Tom has been able to organise the pool at Princes Grant ... and apparently some free beers (Ok now I have your attention)

We will get together then this Friday as per usual, just for a social braai and chat around any details regarding the workshop in 2 weeks. We will be taking down names on Friday for the workshop with Fernando. There are only a limited number of spots available so it will be a first come first serve thing. (guys who come to the braai wil get preference)

Salty Club Fees 2010

Hi Guys,

We have finally gotten all the details down for this years club membership and activities.

We have changed the vision for the club and have some really fantastic plans for the future. We have decided that we needed the club to be one where we got involved more and that its members would be members not through association but participation.

So its going to be a great year with pool training , learning and hopefully some trips thrown in for good measure. There will be a 'Rewards Program' to those who participate and a whole lot of fun thrown in for good measure.

One of the biggest changes to the club will be the replacing the ol “Dop n' Chop” with a “Pool Dual” where we can have some friendly competition in a safe environment. … And we will probably throw in a “Dop n' Chop” in after wards. :-)

These meets will be a different locations, but we are looking at mainly holding them at Dunkirk Estates Pool. The meet will be moved to the last Saturday of the month, and I will give loads of warning about what will be happening.

We will also be holding training sessions during the week, these will be mostly in the early evenings after work. We are busy working out the best days to do this – and we should start training as early as next week.

This year we have also Sven Wang running the finances and a crew of guys committed to organising and doing some of the training.

The club fees this year are R450.00

Hey Guys,

It is the first Friday of the month!

The Salt Rock Spearfishing Club will be meeting this Friday afternoon at 5pm.
We will be discussing the program for the year and some of the projects we
are trying to get up and running.
We will also be discussing the 2010 fees structure and what that will get you.

One of the new developments will be the introduction of freediving training and competition.
This something that a couple of us with the support of another freediving club have been
working on and we would like to present it to you and get your feed back.

We will also be looking for guys to come on board and help with the club.
This is essential if we are to have a dynamic and rich community that will
be of value to its members.

Here are some of the people we are looking for:
Treasure - some one who can handle the finances
Event overseer - some one who can rally the troops and make things happen.
Freediving Trainer Assistant - some one who can help over see the freedive training (training will be provided)

We need everyone's involvement if we are going to bring new life to the club. So please if you can try make the meeting.

For those who can stay on we will braai at 7pm and enjoy the usual "Dop n Chop"

Hi everyone

This is Chris's wife, Michelle. I am sure you are all aware that Chris has been in Mozambique for the past 3 weeks. The fish have not been on and things have looked quite bad for them in the way of good footage for a new dvd. That all changed today!!!!!

Today Chris shot and landed using a reel gun, got it on film.....( I hope you are sitting) a 200kg black marlin!!!! Yes that is correct.

I do not know the full details, as when I spoke to him he was still in a state of surrealism.

BUT in light of this I think my man deserves a celebration. So I would like to invite you all to a bring an braai at our place. You all now the drill for club meets.

I have just got an sms from Chris, the marlin weighed in at 228kg!!!!!

I so hope you guys can make it. Time will be 6.30pm. Fires will be on the go at 7.

Please could you let me know whether you will make it just so I have an idea of how many will be coming. You may have to bring your own chair, plate and knife and folk.

Salad and garlic bread will be provided.

This Friday is Club Nite and we will be getting together around the fire as always.
This Friday will be fairly relaxed, but I will spend some time going through the new Salty's Site.

Hey Guys,

What was a relativity unplanned Salty Divers Club Nite has become rather a BIG DEAL!

I was going to show some of the club guys the long awaited DVD in the lounge at home after the club braai.

Well that plan was hijacked and now we have a BIG SCREEN a kick ass projector and monster sound!

We have moved outside to make space for every one to come and join in and share

in this epic moment when 2years of hard grapht comes life for the first time!!

We did a test run just now and I never thought it would look so good blown up!!

Truth is I am excited and just had to send this mail out to everyone!

So here's the plan!!

There will be braai's going from 6:30 (ladies and wives or veggies to bring salads etc)

We will chow down and start the DVD at 8pm sharp ... with all the extras this will take us to 10pm

Please bring a blanket or deck chair to sit on.

A New Dawn

Sitting down to write the first news letter for USM there is real sense that another milestone has been reached!
This has been quiet an extraordinary journey so far, getting this mag into your hands for free. What was a simple mission to produce the 'coolest' homegrown dive mag has also become an endeavour to reach each and every diver in SA.

I am now caught between reaching all the guys, sharing what is happening in the apnea world, and fulfilling dreams of romantic, colourful adventures of wild trips and monster fish retold in high gloss immortality!

Already the adventure has begun with guys sending in the most insane stories, pic's, and emails from guys frothing with excitement over the prospects of an all South African apnea magazine.

Proud, but at the same time absolutely daunted for the task ahead. With our course set and our destination beckoning like that first time Mozambique dive trip oozing with promise.

It it with our deepest regret that we have lost one of our Brothers to the see. During a regular family holiday to their cottage at Bulungula in the Transkei, Greg North drowned while spearfishing in 18m of water, his father Pete was left to recover his body. Greg was a bright and intelligent individual as well as an experienced spearfisherman. Greg's funeral was in East London on the 23rd July 2009. To Pete, Jane, Family and Friends SAUFF's committee and its members offer our most sincere condolences.!

A lot of you may not be aware of what SAUFF is and what it does so we will be utilizing this space to get our message out to all you spearos, old and new. SAUFF is not an organization that only promotes competitive spearfishing, its primary focus is to grow the sport or spearfishing at a development and club level and secondly to protect the interests of our unique sport at provincial and government level. The easiest way to put it is to say that SAUFF is your voice when it comes to your right to spearfish in this country.

SAUFF is concerned with administering all issues pertaining to the sport of spearfishing. These include but are not limited to:

Codes of conduct.
Implementation and updating the SAUFF constitution in line with the Sports and Recreation Act.
Fund raising, sponsorship, government funding and grants.
Attending meetings and workshop conferences which have bearing on your sport.
Input into legislation affecting your sport.
Environmental and conservation matters.
Imaging. (improving the image of your sport nationally)
Awarding of national colours.
Administering and managing the national records database.
Administering and overseeing all SA provincial, national spearfishing events as well as international events in which Protea Underwater Fishers compete.

SAUFF are members or associate members of the following organizations:

South African Sport Anglers and Casting Confederation (SASACC) who in turn represent SAUFF at Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC)
South African Federation of Sport and Sea Anglers (SAFSSA)
South African Underwater Sport Federation (SAUSF)
World Underwater Federation – Underwater Fishing – (CMAS)
Boat Launch Site Advisory Group (BLSAG)

SAUFF regularly deals with regulatory bodies such as KZNCS, [KwaZulu Natal Nature Conservation], MCM [Marine and Coastal Management] and SAMLMA [South African Marine Linefish Management Association] who regulate our marine resource countywide. From a conservation and resource point of view, we deal with issues such as attempts to restrict our user groups access to certain areas or attempts to ban spearfishing completely, boat launching restrictions, recreational catch restrictions etc

SAUFF envisions that by the year 2015, the sport of underwater fishing (spearfishing) will be recognized undisputedly as the most sustainable form of fishing in South Africa. That the sport operates as a professional entity and that it enjoys the support of a growing membership, clubs and other user groups, affiliated organizations and governing bodies.

SAUFF works at having a federation which provides support and a voice to all underwater fishers in South Africa. SAUFF is committed to development and promoting positive publicity for our sport. The mission is to improve the quality of life for South Africans, both socially as well as to enhance nation building by maximizing access, development and excellence at all levels of participation both recreationally and competitively. SAUFF also works at ensuring there is cohesion in promoting care for the environment and sustainability for future generations.

SAUFF remains focused on elevating the status of the sport, keeping up with current international and national trends and disseminating this information to its members. SAUFF endeavours to remain accessible at all times to its members while working closely with other organizations, sister bodies, conservation authorities and government in an effort to promote legislation and policy which is equitable and serves the best interests of the spearfishing community at large. SAUFF pledges to uphold and implement (wherever possible) all legislation pertaining to the sport with a view to conserving the marine environment.

BENEFITS OF JOINING SAUFF:
All spearfishermen and women, as well as clubs who have spearfishing facets should be members of SAUFF. Those who already belong to a club will not benefit directly if they have not joined SAUFF themselves personally.
Benefits of being a member include but are not limited to:

Your annual contribution helps SAUFF attend to matters regarding restrictive legislation.
Your annual contribution goes towards furthering the opportunities of spearfishing especially at entry level.
Receiving a monthly news letter keeping you informed of the latest developments pertaining to spearfishing.
Being an active part of the spearfishing community in South Africa.
Being eligible to dive competitively for your province or country.
Being eligible to claim a South African spearfishing record.

HOW DO I JOIN ?
You can join SAUFF for a nominal annual fee of R20 for non competitive spearos and all juniors under 21 or if you want to be a senior member with voting rights and access to provincial trials and national championships the cost is R100 for a whole years membership. This can be done at your local dive shop, or by going online to www.saspearoranking.co.za where you can register online, view a list of current members and clubs, join the forums, learn from others, see who is ranked where in SA, get the latest up dates and check out the gallery.

Friday is a holiday so I guess everyone will be in chilled mode.

It looks like the south will be blowing in the arvo so I will assume that we will all dive the morning.

Hey guys,

Well it is that time of the month again .. CLUB NITE!!

And its a special one, firstly there is the gun draw!! .....and I will be seeing if we cant organise some other little extras :-) aswell to make the draw more interesting.

But a high light is that Brent Addison chairman of SAUFF is driving up from the south coast to come and share a little on SAUFF and the future of spearfishing in SA.

Brent is one of the guys that has been involved in South African spearfishing long before we knew there was such a thing, so it is an absolute honor to have with us.

As you know the club has been trying to support SAUFF and ultimately our future. So this is not one to be missed!!

The long term weather looks great for Friday nite so we will be firing up the coals for sure!!

Hey Guys,

This Friday is Salty's Club Nite!! I will be doing some breath hold training and techniques, so it is one not to be missed.

These training times have proved to be invaluable to some of the guys, and most guys have come away with some improvement to their depth and bottom time.

If you are an old hand and know all the 'tricks' come anyway, I am sure your experience will be of value to some of the newer guys.

I have also finalized the Club Fees etc ....

And after careful consideration I decided that we would try and keep the fees down as to try and attract as many divers.

Not that this is a numbers thing ..for the club!

What we will be doing is putting a package deal together where the fees will also cover your SAUFF Registration

(South African Underwater Fishing Federation)
We are already as a club registered, but I wanted to find away to get all the guys involved and in tune with what is happening with

Spearfishing in South Africa and some of the huge challenges we are facing as a sport.

As a SAUFF member you will be able to participate in certain trails and comps.

Spearfishing and Surfing - Whats Up?

Hey guys,

At the onset of the weekend I was quiet bleak, coz the rivers had come down and wrecked what would have been an all time dive weekend.

But all was not lost, as it turned out the surf was fairly good and surfable from Friday morning till mid afternoon Sunday. On Friday there was some goos swell and my lighty was getting some serious double over head waves ...and beattings :-)

The conditions we great yeasterday and dispite the small swell I landed up surfing for almost 8 hours. Braiden churps up on our out the surf "I still have some energy" ... damn I miss those days!!

Anyway its monday morning, I am sunburned and

Hey guys,

This coming Friday is Club Nite!!

As always ..... a 'Dop n' Chop' a dvd or two and I will be going over some foundational breath hold techniques.

I will cover:
Equipment - how & why the right stuff helps!
Foundational breath hold principals
Breath hold technique and application
plus some good ol tips here and there.

Last time we did a breath hold workshop we had great report backs from guys who had improved their diving.
One guy almost doubled his bottom time!!

So pull in and come check things out, and if you are an ol Salty Dog with years of experience why not pull in and come share you thoughts aswell.

On another subject the Salty-Diver.com site has been down. We were hacked last year and the site just never recovered propperly. To the point that the hackers basically deleted the site and redirected the traffic to porn sites and it got riddled with viruses.

Lantz Mattinson from Afro Media has very kindly taken the site on and it giving it a total overhaul.
It looks like the site will be a whole lot more interactive so am keen to see it when it is up.
Hopefully the site will be up for Friday so we can run through the site together.

Howdy,

Its that time again ...gee it came upon me and I almost forgot!!! Mich actually reminded me, I suppose thats what happens when you stuck in the work mode.

I have been a bit out of touch with the diving as I have been put on the 'bench' with sinus and now flu. I have been trying to wash out the snot in some quality barrels that have been coming through ....... not sure its helping tho ... feel kinda kuk!!

Anyway dive club meet is all good for Friday and eventho the sea is probably going to be poo .... it will be good weather for a 'Dop en Chop'

Every one is asking about the jackets ... I will hopefully have a strike off of the logo for the meet ...hold thumbs :-)

Hey guys - Heads up!

This Friday is Club nite at my place and we are having a workshop on Garrick and Brusher hunting. We are smack in the middle of Brusher and Garrick season, and we are going to try and sharpen your point diving skills.

We will also then see who has the sharpest skills and have our annual Brusher and Garrick comp!!! We are going to throw a curve ball to the whole thing and run it on averages ...... to give the weekend divers a better chance, and to make it a little more tactical. But I will explain more through this week and on Friday nite.

Please remember to bring the wives, girlfriends ..... but Mike Minki has to stay home ... ok?

There is no mistaking the chill. Sunsets of brunt orange and red. Jerseys and beanies, the odd pair of gloves. Yup winter is here and she is in full force.

I had an e-mail from a friend in Plettenburg bay. Snow. Can you believe it 10 photographs of snow on the roads, snow in the trees…snow on the beach.

Another friend of mine, who I've dubbed "Ice-Man" has had problems doing some work in Kokstad, roads closed due to snow.

Two weeks ago I was in the Lesotho mountains. Just missed the Cold. The country is one of the coldest in the world and when these cold fronts come along people die. Imagine minus 10 degrees. No electricity, no water, no transport. I don't know how these guys get by. All they have is a thin mud wall and a blanket. Government sent warning to the Shepard's in the mountains, and fire wood was supplied. Wood is a good idea, you can travel miles without seeing a tree, they have long age been converted to heat. Some area become inaccessible for up to two months in winter. Kind of makes me feel grateful for my comforts. Excuse me a sec while I warm my slightly chilled filter coffee in the microwave.

On the brighter side of life, the icy winter cold fronts bring with them ocean swell. Although the coast is still recovering from the devastation of the last storm swell, there are still some good waves around. Durban is always an excellent option when there is wind and swell. The bay is quite sheltered, and the South Wester is very offshore in the bay, making for some excellent surf.

There are a crew of surfers in Durban who live for these big swells. They have specially adapted surfboards and jet ski's, and take turns towing one another onto huge swells. Years ago there was a project to protect the bay from big swell. Hundreds of tons of sand was dumped out to sea. The idea was to make the waves break far out, dissipating the power of the wave. It did not work to well but did create a new surfing spot, called "the mound". This is the playground of these big wave surfers. They have a "the bigger the better" attitude, and welcome the huge swells, which they ride with grace and skill.

Winter also welcomes the Garrick and the Shad. Two favorite species for fishermen. These fish migrate up the coast from South to North. Catches of Garrick have been reported all along the south coast, and divers are seeing good shoals of these fine fighting fish. The Shad have not yet appeared in numbers. You can be sure as these fronts pass, catches of the winter fish species will become more and more common.

Will there be a sardine run this year? With every passing cold front, they get closer! Rumor has it that they are deep off East London. Will keep you posted.

Spearfishing Update & Salty Diver - Club Meet

Hey guys,

Well the long week end has been great, some diving and even some guys getting waves.

I almost did not dive on Friday, but a mate needed help skippering his boat. So in a flash I was out at sea, we had to change the temperature recorder off Sheffield beach. The water was not great about 4 -5m vis, but we were out there and in our kit so we jumped to try our luck. The first spot had loads of Tassles and Bronzies, but other than that was a bit quiet.

I had my 9 year old son Braiden with me and he was keen to get in so we moved onto a shallow point. It was almost time to go, when I spotted a good sized Rock Salmon. I normally send Braidy down on the fish, but they are usually very skittish. When I got to the bottom in about 4m of water I noticed the Rock Salmon saw not alone and had a shoal of small Dagga with it. It was a tough choice 4-5kg Rock salmon or a 6-7kg Dagga. I took the Dagga!

I hit the surface and told Braiden to go down and I watched him line up and just miss a good sized Dagga. After sorting out my line on my reelgun I dived down on a ledge only a few meters from where we saw the Dagga. The ledge turned out to have a huge cave underneath it jam packed with Dagga. I got another one, and Braiden tried but at 5m down and a couple meters into the cave I think it was a bit past his ability.

The disappointment in his eyes as the tears welled up "I cant get a fish" Hopefully we can change all that up in Mozambique next week ..... smiles!

Diving from boat you can take 5 Dagga with only one large one. We could have taken more fish, but 3 was enough. My mate went into the cave, saw the fish holed up and felt sorry for them. He has only been diving for about a year, and has not had spent years struggling to get an elusive Dagga. I have never seen them like this and took the opportunity with both hands.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) looks like a bomb of a day for a dive with loads of good water around and moderate winds. I have not heard of too many fish coming out other than the odd Snoek or Cuta.

Very important!!!

This Friday is Salty's Club meet. It will be at my place in Ballito. I am going to trying to get some of the 'home' footage from some of the guys recent dive trips ..... should be a good watch!

Till then have fun and shoot loads of fish.

Mozambique Corruption

On every trip there are those experiences that are unexpected. On a recent trip to Mozambique this proved to be very true.
I remember driving next to a lake as the sun was setting. I could see about twenty birds along a five meter strip next to the lake. The amazing thing is that there were about five or six different bird species in that little row. What was equally surprising is that although we stayed in a game reserve, the only other animal I saw in a week was a squirrel? I did not even see a monkey! Speaking to a friend about the mystery, he commented that he thought this was the result of hungry (or not so hungry) locals. This may be true. It just seemed really strange to be in a reserve, six hours from the nearest traffic light, in desolate Africa, and not an animal to be seen.
One can only dream about the magnificent wild life that must have roamed the planes and lined the lakes. Oh we did also see a crocodile…I guess they are not so easy to catch and eat!

I certainly was an interesting trip. What was a real experience was the whole "settling of the account" experience. Once we were in our camp, we were approached everyday by "the official" of the camp. It seems that there were a number of hidden expenses. The "official" who introduced himself as "Lazero" , was an interesting chap indeed. The first two times we met him he was battling to stand up straight, and could not hold a conversation. One of his jobs, apparently , was to open the gate so we could access the beach in the morning. On the second night, he approached us and asked to please not hoot for him in the morning, as he would be sleeping. He said he would leave the gate open for us.(which was a piece of string between two sticks). The next morning as we launched our boats, he was asleep next to the gate, conveniently passed out under the shade of some palms.
Here is an important note, and the lesson I learned in this trip. KNOW THE RULES!!! It seemed that this chap was insisting that we pay R70 a day for fishing in his park. He said that it was for the official fishing permit, and that it was a daily permit. Our information, which later proved to be true, it that a fishing liscence is R150 (about), and that was valid for your entire stay in Mozambique. Once we forced that issue, he changed the rule to R70 a day per boat, launching fee. He had some old forms in Portuguese, and kept pointing at various places, saying that theses fees were required. Of coarse we could not read the form, so we could not interpret what it said, and therefore it was difficult to defend ourselves.
There was more fun and games, around our "bill". We were in Mozambique when the massive swell hit about a month ago. When it hit, halve the camp returned home, not wanting to dive In huge seas (most sensible indeed). When they left they settled the bill with Lazero.
The next day there was a knock at my tent, guess who…it was Lazero. He said that he had come to collect the money. "What money" I asked. He told me that my friends had left and they had not paid. He continued to say that I was now responsible for their bill. He wanted me to pay R70 per person per day for fishing. What had happened is that my friends had left the day before, after negotiating with him. It seemed tat all he wanted was a hundred rand from each of them, which they paid. He now wanted a further R670 from me! When I told him that they had paid him, he refuted it. He then took out his phone and stated that he was going to phone the border and have them arrested there. He then pretended to walk up onto the hill where there was some cell phone signal. I must say that at that point, I was a bit worried. Images of sharing a cell with big sweaty African men came to mind. I began to wonder if I would see one of these cells myself. You see I had only brought a few hundred rand pocket money, and would not even be able to buy my way out of the problem (which is what the game is all about!).
I was busy pondering the fate of my fellow fishermen, when I decided to go find Lazero. Surprise, surprise…he was not up the hill, but chilling in his shaded room. I quickly realized that he had not called any one. I wonder if the phone even worked. (The place had no water or electricity, making battery life very difficult!).

Still everyday he came to the camp and deliberated with us, this would go on for 30min to an hour.
On about day five he came to us and announced that he was going home, and introduced us to two other "officials". A young man and a lady. He said that he was leaving them in charge, and after trying for a while to extract a few hundred rand out of us (to no avail), he left. I seemed to us that he was raising funds for his trip home.
When he left he told these officials that we owed money. This resulted in many more deliberations. Finally a tour came through the camp. There were Portuguese speaking South Africans who helped us sort out the bill. They could read the documentation, and refuted the claims that the "officials" were making.
All in all the "officials were trying to get us to pay about R3000, and our actual bill was R750. (about R250 each for the three of us).

I tried to have the, "don't you want people to come back here", and "if you loose this job, you'll have nothing" talks with them, but they clearly pretended to not understand what I was talking about. This seemed to be the technique they adopted, as soon as you were winning the deliberations.

Talking to others in the camp, it seems that these "officials" operate the same almost every where in the country. At border posts, at road blocks and at camp sites. It takes some serious "Africa smarts" to not become a victim. Thanks to my two mates, Hein and Kevin, who were not nearly as gullible and trusting as I was, I did not become a victim. Thanks guys!

The moral of the story, know your stuff.
Always get a receipt for everything you do.
Know the conversion rate.
Speak to others before you go and get the rates, and the rules.
Don't give money to every "official" who demands it.

The most headway we had was when we said we wanted to see it in writing, and that we wanted an official receipt. No receipt, no pay!!! This worked well. Receipts should be in official receipt books with official print and stamps in them.

Other than all this mess, the trip was great. There were a few times on the trip I swore I would not return, all this nonsense has the potential to seriously ruin the mood of a trip. In the end the beauty of the land, it's remoteness and quality of fish will have me back. This time a lot wiser. Watch out "officials"!

Hey Guys,

Well it is miff all round and there looks like there is little hope of any diving this week!! we are are due a west on Friday so maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel for Saturday.

Just a heads up - Club meet has been moved.

It would have fallen on Friday the public holiday and there are a number of guys all going away. So we have moved it to Wednesday the 11th and will hold the meeting in Durban.
At the last meeting I did some training .. I know that there would have been very little opportunity to work on some of the techniques, but some feed back would be good. I am thinking of doing another training sesh so it should be good.

Anyway hope we get some water before the next meet and we can swap some stories.

About a year or so ago, I got a call from a good friend of mine Brett. Brett was working as the chef at a five lodge in Zululand just below the Mozambique border. First he phoned to say that he had shot a sailfish. A day later he phoned to say he had shot a giant kingfish. A day of so later it was a huge couta. Finally I could take it no longer, and plans were made to be there two days later. The plan was to stay in the staff facilities. Rustic rooms with no running water, no electricity and no refrigeration. I desperately wanted my wife to see that part of the world and tried to convince her to come with. After lots of bribery and persuasion we loaded our one year old son (Tyde) and all our gear and headed for Zululand. It was a trip of six houres, to the nut farm where we were to leave our car. Brett then picked us up in the four by four, which was very necessary to negotiate to rest of the sand road to the resort. We finally arrived, and unpacked, making the accommodation as comfortable as possible. Jennifer was amazing (as always), with a few "It's not so bads" and a "I thought it would be worse". I had tried to paint the worst possible picture so the hut would not seem so bad on arrival. We then wend down to see the resort, it was spectacular. We were waiting for Brett's brother Roger to join us, as the afternoon we went on, message came through that Roger and his wife Haley would not be able to join us for the weekend. Bummer, I had relied on the female companionship for Jennifer, so I could selfishly dive the whole day. We were standing under the shade of a huge tree, hanging on the landrover, talking about the weekends plans. Brett then turnes to us and said, "hey do you want Rogers room?". The thought was great but I had read that the rates are R2000 per person per night and knew it was impossible. So I answered "naaa, it's a bit expensive". Bret then blew me away with his response. It turned out that had free bednights given to him by the resort as part of his package. Seen at though he had already booked the room, it was now ours. He only asked if we would pay the admin fee of…R50 a night. We were so excited. We grabbed all our belongings and headed for the suite. It turned out to be the honeymoon suit.

Included in the package was three five star meals a day, and all sort of yummy goodies in the room. Jennifer and I were living it up.

It made it really hard to miss breakfast and go dive the following morning.

I finally managed to tear myself away from the bed, and Brett and I wee off. We went a few kilometers up the beach and began to swim out. The swim seemed to take forever. The ocean bed had such a gentle gradient there. After about forty minutes of swimming I begged Brett to stop. We were now about a kilometer out to sea and my legs were burning from the swim. We decided that this was deep enough. We had hardly caught our breath when Brett died down on a couta, and two minutes later had is strung up on the buoy. The next thiry minutes of the dive will be a time I will not forget.

I dived down, it was about twenty meters deep. The viability was about fifteen meters, making the last five meters down to the ocean bed invisible from the top. This was my first dive down, as I reached the bottom I saw a huge shadow disappear into the milky distance. It had been a three meter tiger shark. When I returned to the surface, Brett was already diving down and I did not get to tell him about the shark. Knowing that we had a dead fish with us in the water was not a reassuring feeling. I dived down again, and as the bottom of the ocean came into focus I saw that there was no more shark, good news. I lay for a moment and the ocean floor looking for a fish, then I saw another shadow, it came closer. A 2.5meter shark. I returned to the surface. This time I did manage to talk to Brett. I asked him if he had seen the shark, he said that he had. We continued to dive for a while, and the shark became more confidant, coming closer and closer, we would often see him coming off the bottom. I was keen to chase him away so I swam down after him. The shark took off at great pace, and I was a little comforted. Then I noticed another shark, one the exact same size. Then I again spoke to Brett, I asked him "did you see the second shark?", he said..."oh you mean the much smaller one...ya, but he was so small". Suddenly I realized that there must be at least three sharks under us in the invisible milky murk.

I reluctantly dived down again. This time the two sharks were swimming together , and they were swimming faster, a sure sign that things were deteriating. Now the sharks suddenly became very interested in our couta. Brett pushed the one shark off twice with his spear gun. I was looking forward and scanning the water, my gut told me to turn around, and as I did, I saw the tow sharks coming straight at me. The were flying at a 45 degree angle from the ocean floor, I swung my gun around to try and put something between me and the sharks. About a meter away from me they parted, one swam arou8nd me to my left, and the other to my right. At this precise moment, I decided I had had enough. I also suddenly realized that a kilometer is a long way to swim when you are tense and under attack. I told Brett that we were going in. He offered no resistance.

The swim in was a bit nerve wrecking. There was lots of looking over the shoulder, as we swam at full speed to the shore. A few minutes later the ocean bed came into focus and I was relieved to be able so tee if there was anything under us. There was nothing, and we made the swim home safely.

The next day we dived again. I lost all my fish to sharks. I decided that it's not a good place to shore dive. I went back to our five star accommodation, where nuts and grape juice seemed like a safer place to be.

Every trip is an adventure, and you never know what will happen. From rustic to five star.

An interesting follow up on this story. I recently managed to dive the same place again, this time from a boat. We dived there the whole day and did not see a shark!? That's how it goes.

Who takes the most fish?

If you speak to anyone over sixty about fishing, they will tell you about the 'good ol days when fish were a plenty". They will tell you how they used to go fishing for a morning and fill the boat with so many fish the boat could hardly float. When you read the books about the fishing in those days, you hear how guys would catch 100 shat in a day or 6 Garrick in a morning. There certainly were a lot more fish around then. So what happened, and who is responsible?

Well for starters there were not very many laws I the good ol days. Bag limits (how many fish you could take) were very generous or simply non existent. This resulted in a massive over fishing. Another aspect of problem has always been the illegal selling of fish. I've heard people speak out against over fishing, or Spearfishing, only to see the same people ask if your fish are for sale. Fish can only legally be purchased from a person who has a valid commercial fishing liscence. In other words, legal permission to sell the fish. By the way there is no such liscence for spear fishermen. You see the guy who catches lots of fish, needs a way to get rid of them. A market. If there is no market, he will not take too many fish, coz…well old fish smell bad.

So bad legislation and illegal activities contributed to the current situation.

There were also millions of tons of fish lost to pollution. Laws have come along way. Affluent and poison from factories have killed fish in rivers and the ocean for decades. Fortunately South Africa is coming in line with international standards, and pollutions effects are lessening.

One huge and un-measurable factor has been illegal netting by trawlers. Over the years there have been many cases of trawlers fishing illegally in our waters. These guys take a lot of fish. One net will hold about a thousands Spearfishing or rock and surf outings. These massive nets pulled behind boats are ruthless killers. They remove entire shoals of fish. Not only that but other fish are also caught in the net. Dolphins, turtles…well anything actually. These creatures of the deep will either die in the net, or be chopped up with all the other fish and sold to hungry starving people.

Long liners also take huge amounts of fish. They drop a line off the back of the boat. This line can run for many kilometers, a baited hook is placed every few meters. These lines are left for a while and then harvested. It works very well and hundreds of tons of fish are the result. Bill fish such as Marlin, Sailfish and Broad Bill are not immune from these traps.

Policing marine waters is very difficult and very expensive, making it very difficult to catch these culprits.

There has been a strong emphasis placed on "tag and release" over the last years. This is a positive initiative, to try and get anglers to release their fish. Each fish is measured and tagged. The information is sent off to a central info hub, and is used to try and better understand the ocean, and its inhabitants.

In a recent article in the "ESA" (Extreme Sports Angling- a brilliant S.A. fishing magazine), talked about tag and release. The editor who is a friend of mine was saying that if each Rock and Surf angler released one fish a year it would result in 400 000 more fish a year in our waters. If you consider that these fish would breed and continue to effect the ocean cycle, it would have a positive effect. The magazine it 'self is a reflection of the current changes and mindset in angling. The magazine encourages release of all fish caught. It talks about safe methods of handling and releasing catches. This type of information was totally void ten years ago. I must say it is good to see pictures of fish you know were released!

There has also been the ban of 4X4's on the beaches, and the introduction of marine reserves and sanctuaries. The amount of commercial licenses available have also decreased significantly over the years.

All this is resulting in some recovery in some sectors of fishing. Hopefully the trend will increase.

Of coarse you will always have those who take the whole conservation thing t to far. Wanting to stone of shoot every fisherman or spear fishermen is not the solution. There are many anglers and spear fishermen who only take what is needed or wanted to eat. This is a growing segment of anglers.

Here are some statistics I found concerning the removal of fish from our oceans. The list is a few years old but give a good indication of the trends.

Catches in Natal from Kosi bay to Durban per Annum.

64 Tons Spearfishing 2.3%

500 Tons Ski Boats 18.6%

900 Tons Rock and Surf Angling 33.7%

1100 Tons Commercial Fishing 41.1%

Well now you know who is doing the damage!

Hi Guys,

Well its that time of the month again, and we will be getting together for a club meet / social at my place on this Friday.

We will do the usual bring and braai ... so every thing will be chilled out. I am also going to do a little bit of training, just some basic tips on breath hold, common mistakes made will diving down and returning to the surface; how good posture / technique can increase your depth, and more.

We have also had a good response to the guys wanting shirts. For members the cost is R60 and non members R70. Remember if you ... our should I say when you pay your fees (R200) you get a free shirt. So please support the club and get those club fees in.

For the adventurer at heart, there are few things more exciting than an impending expedition. All plans are made, arrangements finalized. Many nights are spent falling asleep to dreams of blue water and big fish.

I was lucky enough to be invited on a Mozambique fishing trip and about now (as you read this…I should be diving the blue clean waters of the Mozambique Channel. I’ll fill you in on the details when I return.

One thing that must be taken into consideration when you travel to these areas is Malaria. There seem to be so many opinions on the issue though. In a search for answers I went onto the Salty-Diver web site and posted a forum. This resulted in some interesting discussion on the topic. I have posted some of the information.

Question.
I'm off to Mozambique. What is the way to approach the whole malaria issue?
What medicines, if any should I use?
Do the homeopathic medicines work?
What preventative measure should/can be taken?

Homeopathic remedies definitely do no reliably work The chances are that you won't get malaria & this is where some people get the impression of different things working(my brother didn't listen to this advise , took homeopathic medicine & came back with malaria)Doxycycline is the drug I prefer it is very well tolerated and inexpensive. It can occasionally cause a sun sensitivity reaction but this is relatively rare. It is taken once a day starting the day before you enter the malaria area & continued for 4 weeks after leaving area.Malanil is another alternative also very well tolerated (no sun reaction) but is a lot more expensive. It is taken as above but only for 1 week after leaving area.The third alternative is mefliam/lariam. This has a number of medical contraindications and can cause some dizziness & disorientation in some people which is not good if you’re diving or driving. It can also cause disturbed sleep (unfortunately dreams not usually about beautiful woman or clean seas just disturbed sleep)Some people advocate not taking drugs but just to treat the malaria if you get it. They say that the drugs mast the symptoms but this is an inaccuracy. The drugs if properly taken are 90-95% effective but if there is treatment failure it is never absolute , you get some suppression so that you get the disease much more mildly hence the mistake that symptoms are masked. Remember in extreme cases you can be dead within 48 hours of first showing symptoms (rare but possible) You take your choice I personally use doxycycline

Sorry forgot to say don't for get the mosquito repellents. They must be DEET containing producte (tabard , peacefulsleep or mylol)The anophyles mosquito that carries malaria comes out at night so dusk to dawn are your danger times with the vast majority of bites between 10pm and 4am.This mosquito also does not make the typical buzzing noise when flying or generally leave itchy mosquito bites so people often assume they are not there (this is not to say you won't get other species of mosquito there as well and so see all the normal things you see with them in KZN)

I later found out that “Paddo” is a pharmacist, and should be qualified to talk on the matter.

Chris Coasts, the chairman of the Salt Rock Spearfishing Club” said this :
“ You don’t want to get malaria. You feel sick for a few days, then you feel like you are dying for a few days. Then you spend a few days wishing you were dead. Then you loose about 20kgs”

It really sounds like you don’t want to get Malaria (besides the loosing 20 kg part).
What we can tell from all this is that some measures must be taken. If you travel to malaria areas, always prepare for the dreaded mozzies. If you are not sure visit you local Doctor for more professional advice. Regardless of what action you choose to take, take action.

Spearfishing in Summer by wayne Duncan

My Mate Wayno writes for a local paper ... here is a sneak preview of his article.

Diving in the heat of summer can be seriously claustrophobic.Often it’s like
30 000 degrees by 5:30am. Now imagine climbing into a wetsuit in these
conditions. Often you wake up, after sleeping in nothing, having thrown the
sheets off at midnight. The fan is on maximum and you are off for a dive. The
game fish love the hot weather and water. You arrive at the beach, and kit up.
First of all it’s your wet suit. Made up of two parts. A “long John”, which is
long pants and a vest top all in one. You then put your top on, long sleeves
with a hoodie ( a beanie made of wet suit material). In addition to this you put
on neoprene socks (to prevent chafing from your fins), and gloves, also make of
neoprene. If all this does not make you feel rather bogged in, you then put your
mask on. By now your feeling like stepping into a fridge to cool down. Many dive
spots require some walking. So its often a long walk up the beach before or/and
after your dive. This does not help you temperature management. Many guys carry
all the gear up the beach (including weight belt and gun and float and fins) and
then get dressed at the designated dive spot. Not a bad idea! And if you shoot
some good fish…oh boy. Now you have no hands to carry gear, so you are forced to
wear your gear, and you have to carry 30kg of fish up the beach. It’s a lot of
weight to drag up a long soft, hot beach. All the while it’s getting later in
the day and the temperature is climbing.One thing about these suits, you really
sweat in them. They are designed to keep you warm after all! You wrap some
plastic around yourself and sit in the sun, you’ll sweat. It’s very much the
same with a suit. I wont tell you how the whole equation is worsened by not
being able to go to a toilet while out to sea. This results in…well lets just
say “some unwanted soak”. Siss man.

The other morning I went for a dive off my boat. That night was really
hot, I remember sweating like mad through the night, leaving a wet pillow in the
bead as I woke up. My dive buddy was picking me up and I was running a little
late. I grabbed my gear and headed to the boat. We hit the beach in record time.
While launching the boat one of my water bottles were washed off the boat. We
dived for about three hours. After two hours I really started to feel a
bit “miff”. My head felt swollen and I was feeling slightly sea sick and
slightly disorientated.
When we hit the beach I headed home, feeling terrible
I lay on the bead for an hour trying to recover.I had a head ache and felt like
doing absolutely nothing, and I was seriously grumpy (sorry wife!) Suddenly it
dawned on me…”I’m thirsty”. As I thought about it I realized that I had had
almost no liquid in the last 12 hours.Being a warm night I sweated out a lot of
liquid during the night. Being late I did not drink anything before we left, and
I did not drink a lot on the boat. To remedy the situation, I drank about
three liters of “energade” and immediately started to feel better, although was
not full recovered for 24hrs.

It was a silly error. Talking to experienced divers, I found that most
good divers “pre hydrate”. This means that they fill themselves with liquid
before diving. Water before you sleep, water as you wake, and water before you
dive (not to much to avoid being bloated). Energade seem to be a firm favorite.
If you are on a boat, drink something every 30 min.

Being dehydrated is no fun. Due to the time it takes to recover, it could
seriously wreck a weekend dive trip!

Hey all,

We had a great club nite on Saturday at Angelo's. The food was good and most of all the evening was well supported.

We had a good mix of regulars and some new faces, unfortunately the rugga did make it difficult for some to get to the meet. Sorry about that guys, when we planed the evening a couple months ago we had no idea about rugby fixtures.

Anyway we did have a great time, some of the highlights were getting our new club shirts ..... which are super rad thanks to Steve Farrer for organising everything and checking all was good; Leisle Friend for the great Cartoon on the back; Turtle Shagga for the cool punch line and Dale Peterson from Massive Clothing.

We also honoured the club member who really gave it stick! Coatesmans Spearfishing sponsored a 1.4 Freedivers Railgun which will now get properly used and abused in the hands of Mr Shaun Reid.

Shaun as you all know dominated the Garrick and Brusher comp, even claiming a new club record Brusher. He also has the most posts on the forum and has diligently contributed to story's and pics on the site. To top it all, he is the keenest dive of us all, getting in when ever, and in what ever - even when it is mirk he would say " I like it like this its good for fish"

The Vidal Club trip in March. This should be a great trip, the fish are usually on at this time and weather is at its most predictable. We have 2 fishermans cabins booked. The one is already fully booked and the other is still empty. Barracuda /(I think this is the one .. it's the big one at the end) is still open. The booking is from the Thurs 22nd - Sunday 25th. the Wed is a public holiday and we are trying to make a plan for that nite. We are however needing boats! We have one that can take 4guys but I think those spaces have been hooked already. Please let me know if you are wanting to come and if you have a boat.

Underwater hockey!!! There is a bunch of guys and gals who are getting underwater hockey going up our way. There is one small detail and that it is up at Darnall. apparently it is the only tiled pool in the area?? I am keen and if we can get a bunch together and pile into a car it wont be too bad. Please let me know if you are keen.

A new thang we are going to try, and that is every alternate month have a club meet in Durban. We have at least half our members from the greater Durban area and want to make it easier for them to get to meetings / socials. For us Saltie boys ..its road trip time, and should be fun.

So the next club meet Friday 2nd March will be at my place as usual. The following meet will be in Durban on Saturday 7th April, and so on and so forth. I will get a list of all the dates out .... some time :-)

There was something else I was supposed to remember .... damn snorkelitis .... it makes me a little dim :-)

Not a train smash I will remember sometime and get to write another news letter ... all good!

Hey guys,

Just some quick up dates!

Our shirts will be ready for Saturday ... Dale at Massivegear is on the program. He has put together some top quality shirts, not your run of the mill stuff. We have even done some proper fitted ladies T's and some for the kids.

For those guys who are members they will get a T on the house, any extra shirts or shirts for the kids will cost R70 .....cheap!

So firstly pay your subs!!! Then come on Saturday and get your shirt. And dont forget the kick butt pizza's, 4 those of you that have forgotten already we will be at Angelo's above the CNA in Ballito 6:30 -4- 7:00pm (near Salmon Bay) and kids are welcome, they get to do there own thang ...pizza's, playstations, dvd's etc.

On that note would it be possible to reply to this mail and let me know if you will be making it, we need to get a rough idea on numbers.

This will also be a great opportunity to invite new guys to come have a 'look see' ... the more the merrier.

Now onto the web site! Sorry it was down over the week end, and I had loads of guys all asking whats happened? It mad me realise how many guys actually check the site on a daily basis. ....It's Great!!

Talking about great things did you see Deborah's Cuta??? Go check it out ... especially all you ladies.

You would have also noticed that there is another Record. Craig Harper shot a pending SA Record Threadfin Mirrorfish 9.22kg .... I am just waiting on a story to get up there ... no pressure Craig :-)

And talking about records this January has been the best ever, with 5 records being broken: Snoek, Yellowfin Tuna, Stumpnose, Prodigal Son, and Threadfin Mirrorfish.

You will see that there is a special section now in the gallery for records ... go check it out!!!

We have also added a new feature to he gallery were you can rate the pics .... it will be interesting to see the ratings in a few months from now.

Hey Salty Boys,

Its been one hellova week, the snoek have been loose and the sea conditions epic. I think almost every one I saw diving got at least one fish. Some got a whole lot more ..:-)

Just to remind you that Saturday 3rd Feb is going to be our Club Evening at 'Angelo's Kitchen' above the CNA in Ballito. Brett the owner and Spearo has designed a special pizza for us. It's a 'Club Spearo Pizza' . One half is chunky chicken and bacon with feta, hence the 'Club' part. The other side is pepper dews and calamari ... the spearo part. I had the honour of test driving one on Wednesday nite and have to say it is the absolute bomb.

We will also be handing out our club shirts on Saturday, so if you have paid your fees there is a shirt for you. We will also have some for sale, I am not sure what the price will be but it should be in the region of R60.

Our Club trip in March is also going ahead as planed, Mich is putting together pricing and room allocations.This year you will have to pay in advance!! In the past Mich has spent loads of time running around and collecting money and trying to balance everything out. And half the time we land up getting money after the trip and some one always lands up out of pocket.

By paying in advance the club will also not have to come up with the deposit (which is due shortly) and we will have guys committed to the trip in advance and can plan boats better.

So in the mean time bank on R100 per person per day, put the money aside or even bring it on Saturday. If you have a boat that will be available please let me know, it will be good to plan ahead.

Well it's the new year ..... daaa! So Merry Happy and Happy Merry to every one, I hope you had a blast!
I certainly did, Mozambique was fantastic and you can read all about it on the web.

This last year was a great year for the web site, there were loads of contributions and pics. Its these things that keeps the guys coming back for more. I have put up a new Gallery for 2007's spearfishing pics, so get those pics in!!

There is also 2 other additions to the site, firstly a news blog. This were all 'these' mails to the club will be archived, and you will be able to see what the club is up to even if you are not on the mailing list. It also creates more pages on the web with google ads, this in turn creates revenue for the club. ....and that is a good thing!

Secondly I have started my own blog and will post viz and sea condition reports on there .... daily. Well that's unless it is really trashed and I don't go down to look. I normally have a look at first light and will be posting the report via my cellphone ..... got to love technology :-)

On the Club side there are a few things to take note of:

The Club Comp!!
Tony has asked me to get the word out, and to ask guys to start getting sponsors. Even if you just start arousing some interest with some business's ...we will help get them to commit to some prizes. The comp and be a great thing for the club and we need every ones help to make it great .... so lets all climb in.

The Club Family Trip to Vidal 21-25 March
The trip has been confirmed and we are all on track to go. There is a comp scheduled for the same dates down south for the same weekend, but after chatting it through with Tony we decided that we will go to Vidal. The booking was hard to get and we have been planning it since last year already. Any way we will keep you posted on the details of the trip, so all you need to do is book your leave and if you have a boat let us know if it will be available for the trip.

Club Meetings
Our first club meeting will be on the 3rd February it is a Saturday and will probably be at a restaurant. We are doing this so that as many guys can come through for the meet as it will be a key meeting for the year and need everyone to be there. So please diarize this day now and come and get involved.

Other than that 2007 is going to be a blast, happy hunting.

Hey Guys,

Just a quick reminder about the meeting on Saturday the 3rd of February. We will meet at Angelo's Kitchen above the CNA in Ballito .... near where the Spur is ... which is near to Salmon Bay ...which is in Ballito! Got it??

Also there have been a number of guys asking if there are any changes to the club fees and how to pay them. The club fees are going to stay the same R200 cheap South African Rands. This time you will get a shirt ... Wimpy is on the case and they are being printed as we speak. He still has his speargun so he is still smiling. So all I have is a grotty cellphone pic :-( bummer it was one for the wall.

Hey guys,

Here is a story Wayno writes for the local paper ..... it's a good read!

Every now and again you hear rumors about a fantast6ic fishing spot. The stories
and legends were coming to us about a secret spot in the Transkei. Being ever
ready for an adventure we planned to go an test this spot first hand. A few days
later we received photos of fantastic fish that had been caught there. We now
knew it was more that a rumor, and had to get there. The next e-mail contained
actual GPS co-coordinated of the reef in the area and we were now totally set,
and totally amped.

Spear guns were serviced, and dive shops visited
to get everything we might need. Leave was organized, and business details set
in place. We were ready. Tomorrow we go. So we thought.

The call
came at 12:30 that night ( we were set to leave at 05:00). The river at “the
spot” had broken and heaped a million liters of chocolate brown water onto the
dive spot, leaving it totally undivable. End of the trip. The next day left us
down and dejected. We were all dressed up and no place to go, a most depressing
state for a fisherman to be in. But there was hope, we had leave and a 4X4, and
an adventuress spirit. We decided, that a trip North into Mozambique would be
the order if the day! Excellent, finally I could go to Mozam, having never been
there before, I was bursting with excitement. Everyone was keen and it was on.
So we thought. The 4X4’s log book was lost. This must be produced at the border!
Trip cancelled. Two trips of a life time cancelled and out the
window.

Perseverance is sometimes called for and we were now more
determined than ever to make something happen. Due to all the heavy rains along
the coast, the only clean water was in Vidal and in Sodwana. We were glad to
hear that there was good water there and so we decided to head there! Only
problem is, being December, every last campsite was booked! Everything, there
was no accommodation anywhere. Over a Wimpy breakfast we resolved to not give up
still. (man were we determined). I hopped on the inter net and started phoning
people near Cape Vidal, I finally found a place to pitch a tent. We were once
again set!
That night the phone ran again, it was one of my two dive buddies
who was coming with on the trip…”Hi Wayne, there was some lightning last night,
my computers are fried. I have to have them fixed and sorted before I go!”.
Wanting to wait for our mate we decided to delay the trip one more day.
Unfortunately by the evening, the computer company had not arrived, leaving my
friends computers as fried as ever. We simply had to leave the next morning, as
time was running out. We made our plans to leave in the morning. The only
problem was that now we were two, and we need to be three. A few calls later and
we had another keen diver. We were once again and finally set. Of coarse we had
no 4X4 to launch the boat, but hat did not worry us, we were on our way.
The
next morning arrived without incident, and that afternoon we pitched our camp
fifty kilometers from the launch site. Ready to launch the boat the next
morning.

The following day we were floating in crystal clean water,
not a care in the world. The previous days incidents a distant memory, we were
happy.

There was one moment on the dive trip that stands our for
me.
One of my crew was Cornelis. Cornelis had never shot a queen mackerel
(snoek).
We came to a place with a few and it was his chance to jump in the
water. He hopped in and within a minute shot a good sized snoek. Two minutes
later he shot another. We were so excited for him. It’s a fantastic feeling to
land a new species, especially one that is so good to eat. He got two, proving
that it was not just luck. We were so excited, we were cheering and whistling
and hooting. He smiled for days.
When all is said and done and planned, it’s
those moments that make all the effort worth while.
